Pit Pot, full name The Magical Castle Pit Pot (不思議のお城 ピットポット Fushigi no Oshiro Pit Pot, lit. "Mysterious Castle Pit Pot"), is a action game developed and published by Sega in 1985 for the Master System. This game is a prequel to Alex Kidd in Miracle World, featuring Alex Kidd's brother Igul as the main character.
Pit Pot was only released as a stand-alone game in Japan, where it was distributed only on Sega MyCard. However, the game did make it to the west as part of the Astro Warrior / Pit Pot compilation cartridge. The Japanese original features an edit mode which was not included in this release. Also, like many Master System games, Pit Pot has been included in numerous Brazilian revisions of the Master System console as a built-in game.
Story[]
Deep in the Pit Pot Castle, Princess Rooney is confined by a notorious sorcerer. A number of would-be heroes went into the castle with the aim of rescuing her, but no one ever returned alive because the entire castle is comprised of mazes and the monstrous creatures are always on the lookout.
To destroy the evil enemies, the "Sorcerer's Hammer" is needed. Fortunately, or unfortunately, Igul, the knight, happened to pick up the hammer that the sorcerer dropped, and determines to enter the Pit Pot Castle.
The Pit Pot Castle is comprised of a number of rooms which are intricately connected by doors. In a certain room, the 3 treasures required for rescuing the princess are placed. Destroy the monsters with the hammer while breaking the castle floor or returning the broken portion to its original condition, and save the princess.
Gameplay[]
In Pit Pot players must navigate maze-like rooms which are interconnected and find the princess. However, before rescuing her the player must find three key items: a golden bottle with holy water to dispel the magic cast on the princess, a magic cross to seal the sorcerer's magic, and a ring to ask the princess hand in marriage. If the player attempts to rescue her while missing any of these items the game ends prematurely, the ending depending of the items obtained.
While navigating the rooms the player must fend off the roaming enemies and collect the items lying around. The player is equipped with a hammer which can be used both to break the floor's tiles and kill enemies, though they automatically respawn when they're defeated. If the player breaks a floor tile sustaining a portion of the floor the whole portion will fall down, dropping any enemy and item that were on it.
The game has four difficulty levels. Each of these levels feature a different maze layout, with the higher difficulties having more rooms to navigate compared to the lower ones:
- Practice - Four rooms.
- Beginner - Sixteen rooms.
- Average - Thirty-six rooms.
- Expert - Sixty-four rooms.
